What is an IPL Photofacial?
An Intense Pulsed Light photofacial is a phototherapy treatment that uses different wavelengths of light to treat different skin conditions. The IPL photofacial is primarily used to treat a variety of skin conditions such as acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and melasma. The IPL photofacial treatment is a multi-step procedure. In the first step, a special dye called ChromaID is applied to the skin. This dye helps the technician pinpoint the area of concern. The second step is the application of IPL light to the skin. IPL treatment works by sending light into the skin to trigger the natural production of collagen and elastin within the skin. The third step is applying the Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) solution to the skin. This is a light-sensitive solution that is activated when exposed to the light source. The PDT solution works to break down the pigments that cause hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tones.

How Does the IPL Photofacial Work?
The IPL photofacial works by sending light into your skin to trigger the natural production of collagen and elastin within the skin. As these two elements are broken down by the sun, they can cause discoloration and uneven skin tones. The IPL photofacial uses light to trigger these skin-renewing chemicals and reduce the appearance of melasma, acne scars, and other types of hyperpigmentation. IPL works to break down the pigments that cause hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tones. IPL is most effective at treating freckles, age spots, sun damage, and skin discoloration. IPL is also used to reduce the appearance of acne scars, though it is not as effective for acne treatment. IPL is different than other light therapy options like photodynamic therapy (PDT) because it uses one wavelength of light for multiple treatments.

Side Effects of IPL Photofacial
Some side effects of IPL photofacial include redness and swelling of the skin. These are common side effects that should subside within 24 hours. You may also experience mild stinging or burning of the skin during the IPL photofacial. You may also experience a mild sunburn sensation or feeling like your skin is itchy or tingly. The IPL photofacial may cause your skin to be extra sensitive to the sun in the days following the treatment. You should avoid spending time in the sun and wear sunscreen daily to prevent burning and damage to your skin. You should also avoid using products that are heavy on oil, as they can cause clogged pores and acne breakouts.
